Okay so here’s the thing, square is still making turn based games. They are making Dragon Quest games still, Octopath, bravely default etc. it’s just Final Fantasy has evolved in its platform and there’s nothing wrong with that.

They really problem is they haven’t perfected a combat system that’s solid like games Tales of has perfected. Even if you look at FF and their overall desires for the franchise they have always been pushing to go to new heights of interaction.

1-10 always did something different with the magic to combat multi hits based on speed, Expanding skills and making things look more like an action sequence with player control.

10-2, 11, 12 and 13 we’re all trying to get the players more engaged and active. 14, 15, 16 and 7 remake all gave players control.

The real problem with 16 was the summon battles were better then most of the recente game and the standard pacing of story and world exploration was the complete opposite of the high paced action. It felt sluggish behind that.

I honestly feel like 7 remake and rebirth perfected the flow, but I also wonder if my bias of loving 7 hinders a view I’m not seeing. Overall, I am perfectly fine with Square Enix continuing to explore and put things out.

But maybe the passive franchises they been making turn based they can ramp it up a bit.
